A heat pump that cools fine and won't heat
A heat pump does two jobs with one set of equipment. In summer it moves heat out of the house, the way a standard air conditioner does. In winter a reversing valve flips the refrigerant flow and the same machine pulls heat in. That is efficient, but it also means the system runs nearly all year and piles up run hours in both seasons.
The complaints we hear are consistent: the house cools well in July and then blows lukewarm air in December, the outdoor unit ices over and stays iced, or the electric backup heat runs far more than it should. A reversing valve that sticks, a defrost control that fails, a weak outdoor fan or a low refrigerant charge can each cause one of those. A system that cools but cannot heat is rarely a thermostat problem, though the thermostat is where we start looking.
Because the fault could sit on either side of the reversing valve, the diagnosis has to test both modes. That is the difference between a repair that holds and a second call in the first cold week.
Three kinds of heat pump, one honest conversation
We work on air-to-air heat pumps, water source heat pumps and geothermal systems. An air-to-air unit trades heat with the outdoor air and is the most common setup in Montgomery County homes. A water source system exchanges heat with a water supply instead, and a geothermal system uses loops in the ground. Which one fits depends on the property, the existing ductwork and what is already installed, so we walk through the options with you rather than assume one answer fits every house.
Each job follows the same pattern we use on cooling: System Evaluation, Clear Recommendations, Professional Service, Final Testing. Pricing is upfront, straight forward and flat rate, with no hourly charges and no surprises. For a new system we install American Standard, where we are a Preferred Dealer, and SureComfort, and we service all major brands. If a single room or addition is the real problem, our ductless mini-split work may be a better fit.
We have served Conroe, The Woodlands, Shenandoah, Spring and the rest of Montgomery County since 2009, under Texas licence TACLB28011E. Same day service and emergency after-hours service are available, and the number is 936-890-8991.
Test it in heating mode before you need it
The cheapest time to find a heat pump problem is a mild fall afternoon, when it can be switched to heat and watched. The worst time is the first cold night, when a stuck reversing valve or a dead defrost control shows up all at once. A spring visit covers the cooling side, and a fall visit proves the heating side.
Between visits, keep the outdoor unit clear of grass clippings, leaves and debris, and change the filter on a regular schedule so restricted airflow does not push the system harder. Call sooner if the outdoor coil stays iced after a defrost cycle, if the backup heat seems to run constantly, or if the unit short cycles.
That twice-a-year rhythm is what the Loyalty Club is built around: two annual visits scheduled at your convenience, pre-season scheduling, a reminder service and 15% off repairs, with a 2 Year Labor Warranty Guarantee across the program. The Plus tier adds a 21 Point Inspection and $500 off a system replacement.
